When it comes to stylish and flavor-enhancing coffee brewing methods, the Chemex coffee maker is one of the first that comes to mind. This elegant glass brewer, which looks more like a design object than a coffee-making tool, has earned its place both in design museums and in the kitchens of true coffee lovers.

What is the Chemex coffee maker?

The Chemex is a pour-over coffee brewer invented by German chemist Peter Schlumbohm in 1941. His goal was to create a tool that combined scientific precision with aesthetic beauty. The result was a timeless glass carafe with a wooden collar – a detail that made the Chemex into an icon.

Fun fact: Thanks to its beauty and iconic shape, the Chemex has also made its way into pop culture. You can spot it several times in Monica’s kitchen in the legendary TV series Friends.

How does the Chemex work?

Using a Chemex is both simple and precise. Hot water is poured evenly over ground coffee sitting in a thick paper filter. These special Chemex filters hold back oils and fine particles.

The result is a clean, bright cup of coffee where every note shines through. That’s why the Chemex is the perfect choice if you want to experience the true character of each coffee variety.

Why choose a Chemex?

It’s no wonder that Chemex coffee is a favourite among those who want to explore every detail in their cup.

Step-by-step guide to brewing coffee with a Chemex

  1. Prepare – place a thick paper filter in the Chemex and rinse it with hot water (removes papery taste and warms the carafe).

  2. Coffee and water – use about 36 g of medium-ground light roast coffee and 500ml of hot water (92–96 °C).

  3. Bloom – pour 50ml of water and let the coffee bloom for 30–40 seconds as gases release.

  4. Main pour – add the remaining water slowly in circular motions in one steady pour.

  5. Enjoy – the whole process takes 3.5–4.5 minutes. Remove the filter, swirl the Chemex gently, and pour fresh coffee into your cup.

Chemex and GESHA – a perfect match

One of the Chemex’s greatest strengths is its ability to highlight coffee’s purity and complexity. That’s why we recommend preparing our GESHA coffee (light roast) in a Chemex.

GESHA is legendary in the specialty coffee world – elegant, floral, and with tropical fruit notes. Originating from Ethiopia, it rose to fame when cultivated in Latin America. Today, GESHA is considered one of the most exclusive and nuanced coffee varieties in the world.

The Chemex lets GESHA shine in all its glory – every sip is a clean and refined taste journey.
